Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park
Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania is now characterized by dynamic landscapes as well significant Civil War battles that took place on the same ground
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania, this is America's battleground, where the Civil War roared to its bloody climax. No place more vividly reflects the War's tragic cost in all its forms. A town bombarded and looted. Farms large and small ruined. Refugees by the thousands forced into the countryside. More than 85,000 men wounded; 15,000 killed--most in graves unknown.
Beginning the week of October 7, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania NMP will commence a maintenance project to repair and repave park roads at Chatham, the “Stonewall” Jackson Death Site, and Hill-Ewell Drive on the Wilderness Battlefield.
A new National Park Service report shows that 845 thousand visitors to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania NMP in 2023 spent $56.6 in communities near the park. That spending supported 695 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $81.6 million.
Beginning September 3, 2024, the interior of Chatham will be closed to visitors while the park installs a fire suppression system in the historic structure. For the duration of the project the Chatham gate will remain open 9 am to 5 pm and the grounds will remain open sunrise to sunset.
