Maggie Lena Walker devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, and fraternal leader, Walker served as an inspiration of pride and progress. Today, Walker’s home is preserved as a tribute to her enduring legacy of vision, courage, and determination.
uly 2025 marks the 161st birthday of Maggie Lena Walker, Richmond's pioneering Black banker, community leader, and a woman of faith, hope and courage. July 11-20 the public is invited to experience a series of community events, volunteer service, special tours and exhibitions commemorating her life and legacy. Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site hosts the birthday celebration in partnership with the descendants of Maggie L. Walker, St. Luke Legacy Center, Library of Virginia, Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities and many more community partners.
