Tredegar Iron Works is the starting point for your visit to Richmond National Battlefield Park
The center of Confederate manufacturing fueled a modern war, one of the South’s largest hospitals gave care to the sick and wounded, and armies battled on open fields and in miles of defensive earthworks. From 1861 to 1865, Richmond’s fate would determine America’s future.
Beginning this summer, NPS will focus on collaboration with partners and providing new opportunities for visitors and the community to engage with NPS along the riverfront. This change will involve shifting the visitor contact station operations at Tredegar to allowing staff the ability to expand programming with partners, engage in more riverfront events, while maintaining a more visible presence along the riverfront.
On Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, Richmond National Battlefield Park invites the public to explore the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Cold Harbor, site of the 1864 battle between United States and Confederate armies. This year’s event features living history demonstrations, including Ulysses S. Grant’s encampment, a variety of guided ranger-led tours and hands-on children’s activities for all ages.
The National Park Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn at Richmond National Battlefield Park this week, subject to favorable weather conditions and other factors. The burn will take place on approximately 40 acres of park property at Cold Harbor in Hanover County.
