George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located in the Northern Neck of Virginia. It encompasses 551 acres of land where seven generations of the Washington family lived and where George Washington was born in 1732. The park was also central to one of the earliest efforts to memorialize George Washington during the celebration of his bicentennial birth anniversary in 1932.
George Washington Birthplace National Monument and the Northern Neck National Heritage Area invite the public to celebrate the 293rd birthday of our nation’s first president in the park on February 22. Special events for visitors of all ages will celebrate Washington’s legacy in the place where it began.
On Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th, staff at George Washington Birthplace National Monument and Stratford Hall Historic Preserve will be celebrating the holiday season with a weekend of family-friendly activities and special programs.
Visit George Washington Birthplace National Monument to learn about and celebrate the rich traditions, languages, and innovations of Indigenous people in the Northern Neck. On Sunday, November 10th, cultural demonstrations will be offered by Tribal representatives and community partners from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Memorial Area of the park.
Join park rangers on October 26th for a free, family-friendly evening program titled Taken to the Grave. This special one-hour presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. near the Washington Family Burial Ground at George Washington Birthplace National Monument. Glowing lanterns will illuminate the final resting place of Washington family members and shine light on mysteries that only they can solve. Taken to the Grave promises to be fun for all ages… and perhaps just a little spooky.
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources, in partnership with the Council of Virginia Archaeologists, has featured Building X at George Washington Birthplace National Monument as one of the most notable sites in the state for Virginia Archaeology Month.
